A practical starting point
Your first Medicare enrollment window is seven months.
For most people who become eligible at 65, the Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before the month they turn 65, includes their birthday month, and continues for three months afterward. Starting early can help avoid rushed decisions and possible gaps.
Confirm how you will enroll
Some people receiving Social Security benefits are enrolled automatically. Others must apply. Verify your status rather than assuming.
Review current employment coverage
If you or your spouse is actively employed, learn how that coverage coordinates with Medicare before delaying Part B.
List doctors and prescriptions
Use exact provider names, medication names, dosages, and preferred pharmacies when comparing options.
Choose a coverage direction
Compare Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and Part D plan against Medicare Advantage—not just premiums, but access and expected use.
Understand Medigap timing
Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months beginning the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. Later applications may be subject to medical underwriting unless another right applies.
Keep confirmation records
Save application confirmations, effective dates, plan identification, and agent contact information.
