Timing matters

Different Medicare enrollment periods permit different changes.

The familiar dates on television are only part of the picture. Your current coverage and circumstances determine which window applies.

Four important windows

Know what each period is designed to do.

Around age 65

Initial Enrollment Period

For most people, this seven-month window begins three months before the month they turn 65 and ends three months afterward. It is generally the first opportunity to enroll in Medicare and related coverage.

October 15–December 7

Annual Open Enrollment

People with Medicare can make certain Medicare Advantage and Part D changes for coverage beginning January 1.

January 1–March 31

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

A person already enrolled in Medicare Advantage may make one permitted change, including moving to another Advantage plan or returning to Original Medicare.

When an event qualifies

Special Enrollment Periods

Moving, losing qualifying coverage, and certain other events may create a special opportunity. The available action and deadline depend on the event.

One date does not answer every question.

Medicare plan enrollment periods are not the same as Medigap guaranteed-issue rights. Returning to Original Medicare does not automatically guarantee that every applicant can purchase any Medicare Supplement policy without health questions. Review both sides of a proposed change before leaving current coverage.
